Unlock the Future of Web AR with a Visual Node-Based Editor

Hi Team,

Have you seen this site?

The potential shutdown of Spark AR’s group and platform could leave thousands of creators stranded, disrupting their ability to continue crafting AR experiences. We have an incredible opportunity to bridge this gap and empower these creators to adopt Web AR development seamlessly.

What I think Studio Needs to be the #1 web based XR editor:
A node-based visual editor—similar to those in Effect House, Lens Studio, and Spark AR—would eliminate the need for extensive coding knowledge. It would provide an intuitive, accessible tool for creators to transition to Web AR, opening doors for innovation and widespread adoption.

Why It Matters:
In the Spark AR community, approximately 80% were creators and 20% were developers. With a community of over 100,000 members, empowering the 80% non-developer majority could exponentially accelerate adoption. Visual tools would democratize access, transforming AR development into something anyone can create with as the mission of Studio is.

How I think we can push this forward:

  1. Incorporate a visual editor into Niantic Studio. A deeply integrated, node-based system would replicate the s of success of social AR platforms while ensuring accessibility and usability for all creators. Making it work with code so they can work together, and you can extend visual scripting way.

From my experience in the Spark AR community back then you could create the same filter with code and visual editor, but if you combined both, often you could do more complex task. Picture a node editor that doesn’t restricted by a company rule of what type of AR you can make in terms of technology. It would be a plus if the node editor can work with the Modules too.

  1. Engage the community. I can create and share surveys with Spark AR creators who will be directly affected by the platform’s shutdown in January 2025, gathering valuable insights to amplify the demand for such tools.

  2. Adopt a creator-centric approach. This tool would not only grow the Niantic ecosystem but also attract creators eager to transition to Web AR. Many talented artists lack the coding skills to build apps but have brought their visions to life using patch systems and tutorials. A node-based editor would allow creators and developers alike to achieve equally impactful results, removing barriers and expanding possibilities.

For me Studio represent the hard work of visionary people working at Niantic who line of code by line, connection by connection, idea after idea, are transforming the world, one VPS activated wayspot at the time.

Please, let’s be the bridge that connects AR creators worldwide as they transition from social AR to Web XR geo located / real world metaverse experiences. Let’s be the hope that turns dreams into reality, not just for experts, but for everyone with a vision to make an impact. Together, we can make Studio the leading tool for AR Creators and Developers.

Kind regards,
Diego
