Extended tracking for large 15m x 5m outdoor installation - need AR elements to persist across entire frame

Hi 8th Wall community,

I’m working on an outdoor AR installation for a large wall mural (15m x 5m) with a decorative frame border. I want to place AR elements (gargoyles, animated textures) along the entire frame perimeter, but I need them to stay stable and visible even when users move along the installation and the original image target goes out of view.

My setup:

  • 15m x 5m outdoor wall art with ornate gold frame
  • Users scan QR code β†’ AR experience launches
  • Need AR content positioned at multiple points along the frame border
  • Users should be able to walk the full length and see stable AR elements

The challenge: How do I maintain tracking stability across this large scale? I assume I need some form of extended/world tracking so AR elements don’t disappear when the initial image target is no longer visible in the phone camera.

What’s the right way to create this?

Any guidance on best practices for large-scale outdoor AR installations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to the forum!

I would probably start by creating an Image Target project and slicing the image into 3-4 targets. That way the user doesn’t need to have the entire thing in frame for it to get recognized.
