I am currently looking into a series of AR projects with a museum in the UK and we are looking into using 3D objects around the museum as targets for AR projects.
Iβve had some success using outdoor 3D targets with scaniverse but was wondering your thoughts and advice on using indoor objects as anchors? I ask as scaniverse seems very geared toward using public statues etc as anchors and not indoor objects.
VPS can certainly be used indoors, as long as the locations are safe and publicly accessible. Itβs important that VPS Locations have a clear focal point and that the Location has distinct and unique features, something like the corner of a room is not ideal - a permanent sign or statue is more ideal. You can reference this youtube clip for more information:
Also note that people walking in front of the camera feed while VPS is localized will cause drift, so the AR content is not exactly aligned with the real world. This might be especially prevalent at a museum, unless the Locations youβre using are in low traffic areas or are roped off so itβs unlikely others will pass through the camera feed.
You might also consider using image targets instead of VPS (this would require the Pro Plan + Cloud Editor at this time). You could print signs and use those instead of scanning each location 10+ times. VPS is only truly necesarry if you plan to use the physical world (the pre-scanned mesh) in a meaningful way in the AR experience.
Hey Evan thanks for such a quick reply! in terms of setting up 3D indoor targets would this still need to go through the GSB public location setup with the multiple scans at different times of day etc? or could there be an option for this sort of project in future for indoor 3D targets?
You can create Private Locations on the Pro Plan. This is necessary for locations that are not publicly accessible or are temporary. All locations do need to be scanned several times throughout the day, whether public or private.
