Hey everyone,
Iβm currently exploring an AR experience for the Reunion Tower GeO-Deck in Dallas, which is a scenic observation deck overlooking the entire city skyline. The idea is for visitors to scan a QR code, and then β using VPS (Visual Positioning System) β their phone would identify their position and orientation to overlay tooltips on key landmarks in the skyline in real time.
I was planning to use 8th Wall with Lightship VPS, since it offers the most robust web-based VPS solution currently. However, I have a few questions and concerns Iβd love help with:
1. GeO-Deck Classification: Is it Public Enough?
The GeO-Deck is open to the public, but itβs not freely accessible (visitors must buy a ticket to go up). Would this still qualify as a public location for VPS scanning in Lightshipβs terms? I understand Lightship typically supports public spaces for VPS maps, but this feels like a gray area.
2. Private Scan Viability for Production Use
If the location doesnβt qualify for public scanning, would creating a private VPS map of the observation deck still work for widespread production use, as long as I control the QR code and access point? Any restrictions or caveats I should know about?
3. Reflective Surfaces + Harsh Lighting
Given that the deck is enclosed in glass with many reflective surfaces and changing lighting conditions, Iβm wondering if VPS is truly the best fit for this. Has anyone had success in similar conditions, or should I consider a gyroscope/compass + manual calibration system as a fallback?
Any tips, suggestions, or clarity would be hugely appreciated! Just want to make sure Iβm approaching this the right way before investing too much time in scanning and dev.
Thanks in advance!
