How to Test and Deploy Private VPS scan for Temporary Indoor Installation?

,

Hi everyone,

Before I purchase a Pro license, I’d like to confirm whether a private VPS scan would work for this scenario:

  • The project involves a giant indoor room with a specific temporary art installation.
  • I’d need to scan the installation, input it into a VPS project, and apply objects with animations only around the installation.

Is this possible? Does a private VPS scan require approval from the Niantic team? If so, how long does the approval process typically take? This is important because I might only have a very short window to scan and deploy the project.

Also, which app should I use for a private VPS scan, considering the Niantic Wayfarer app on iOS is full?

Lastly, is there a way to test with a private scan before purchasing a Pro license? My intended workflow is to:

  1. Develop everything beforehand using a placeholder scan of my own room.
  2. Once the installation is ready, scan it, upload the private scan and location, and deploy the project.

Does this workflow make sense for VPS, and is it a suitable choice for my needs?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi!

For a large indoor installation, you might want to consider creating multiple private VPS locations to ensure accurate localization and avoid potential issues.

Private VPS locations don’t require approval, which makes them ideal for your scenario. Public locations, on the other hand, must meet specific criteria, and their approval process can take 1–3 business days depending on how closely they meet the requirements.

To create your scans, you’ll need to use Scaniverse—this is the designated app now that Wayfarer has been deprecated. For more details, check out this thread: Important Update: Niantic Wayfarer App Deprecation on Android.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to create private or test locations without a Pro license. If you want to test your content beforehand, you could use an existing public VPS location nearby.

Your intended workflow—developing with a placeholder scan and later uploading a private scan for deployment—sounds feasible and aligns well with VPS capabilities. Good luck with your project!

Thank you very much for your detail answer, this is very helpful!

Thank you for the detailed explanation!

I have a follow-up question:
How many private VPS locations are included in the Pro license? Would I need to pay an additional fee for creating multiple private VPS locations, or is there a limit included in the subscription?

Looking forward to your insights—thanks in advance!
